Although public health problems and practices generally concern health professionals with specialist education, medical practitioners must not stand apart. The aim of the discussion is to emphasize the role of doctors in public health and consider potential conflicts between public health and the individual goals of medical practice, the competences required by doctors and their involvement in public health issues. Best practice examples and challenges will be investigated.

In the discussion "How Easy is it to be Young (a Young Doctor)?" we will take a look at the daily life of a young Latvian doctor, the professional challenges, the available support and the difficulties caused by the system. In response to the discussion question, the participants will defend two opposing positions, justifying the opinion that being a young doctor is or is not easy. At the end of the discussion, we will agree on a joint panel to highlight the most important insights together with the audience. The purpose of the discussion is to raise awareness of the challenges of young doctors, show good examples and currently available opportunities, as well as point out problems and their potential solutions.

With medical knowledge and public awareness of diseases and their treatments growing at a faster pace than the totality of financial resources available for medical care, reasonable use of the allocated funds is always on the agenda. Decisions in this field are defined not only by a range of standards, guidelines and national best practices, but also by legal, moral, ethical and emotional considerations. Choices based on experience and research will be discussed.

Value-based health care is a model of providing and organizing health care services with the aim of improving the health outcomes of each patient, respecting the patient's personal goals, replacing payment for quantity with payment for result and quality, thus ensuring cost control and fair distribution of limited resources for all groups of patients. During the discussion, presentations and interactive exchange of ideas, it will be explained what the implementation of such a model means for medical institutions and what for the patient, and how ready we are to implement such a model in Latvia.

As life expectancy increases, so do the years of productive life. The 21st century has brought about a significant change in the concepts of youth and age. There are various reasons why doctors continue to work after they are legally entitled to retirement. How do we see the age of our colleagues, how do we see our own age? Is it possible to maintain one’s qualifications to match modern standards? There is an age limit for many professions, but it is not applied to doctors. Should it apply? Are young doctors aware of what they would lose if the older generation would no longer be around?
